TANF Program

Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College is pleased to announce that a new student service program is now available on all campuses for eligible participants. The primary goal of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Student Service Specialist is to help students successfully navigate the enrollment process, find and select an appropriate higher education academic program and to offer ongoing support of those students.  The secondary goal is to help these same students make a successful transition into the workforce and/or continued post-secondary education.    

If receiving WV Works and SNAP benefits, you may qualify to become a participant in the TANF Program. To become a participant, meet with your DHHR case worker, let him or her know that you are interested in obtaining a certificate or an Associate’s Degree at Southern. Then:

  • ·         DHHR Referral process
  • ·         Meet with one of Southern’s Student Services Specialists, Hattie Evans or Cody Bailey
  • ·         Complete initial paperwork with Student Services Specialist
  • ·         Services available in the following counties:
    • ·         Boone
    • ·         Lincoln
    • ·         Logan
    • ·         McDowell
    • ·         Mingo
    • ·         Wyoming

As part of the benefits we offer our students, we present personal development events to offer instruction and useful information for students that they can use in college and beyond.

Effective Study Habits

Learn how to study effectively by determining your learning style and conforming your study habits to do better on tests and develop time management skills.

Money Management

Various money management topics will be covered, including establishing good credit, budgeting, and buying vs. leasing.

Health and Wellness

Balancing a good diet and exercise routine along with a stressful college lifestyle will be addressed.

Career Planning

Tips on how to formulate a professional résumé and how to shine at a job interview will be discussed.


Information on how to improve one’s self esteem will be discussed.

Effective Communication

Suggestions on how to achieve more effective and efficient communication will be presented.

Quitting for Life

Effective methods on how to stop smoking will be discussed.
